MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- One person was injured, and several people were left without a home after an apartment went up in flames early Thursday morning in Bartlett, according to the Bartlett Police Department. The City of Bartlett says the fire broke out at the Quail Ridge Apartments on Egypt Central around 6:16 a.m. One resident was taken to the hospital suffering from minor injuries. (Photo by: WREG staff) Bartlett Fire Department requested help from the Shelby County Fire Department and Germantown Fire Department due to the fire fully evolving. They surround the fire because the structure had began to destabilize. "I give glory to God. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be standing here talking to you," said Shylinda Graystreete, resident. A video shared with WREG shows the fire consuming a stairwell before quickly spreading to the rest of the building.  Dozens of families stood by and watched as their homes went up in flames. Graystreete, who is a dialysis patient, says a neighbor informed her of the fire.  "And then I heard him say 'Get out! Get out!' and so I looked out my back bedroom window and I could see flames on the second floor and I said 'Oh my God, It's fire'," Graystreete said. Renee Hightower lives on the third floor and says the fire started in the unit beneath hers.  "It was just so much black smoke and when I opened the door, I instantly started coughing. So, I closed the door back. I didn't even know which way I could run because it was just black smoke. So, I just knew I had to go off the balcony," Hightower said. It was a decision many residents were faced with.  "So, I started thinking and I said 'Ok I can't panic'. I said God you're going to get me out of this. I climbed over the balcony and I just somehow got myself so that my feet were on the second-floor banister and I was just dangling. And he said you got to let go. I looked up and I could see the fire in my living room. So, I just let my hands slide down the balcony and I let go." Graystreete said. "I thank God for neighbors like that because the young man that was knocking on the door, he got burned helping other people." The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
