LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Kentucky State Police (KSP) have announced that a body found on Wednesday near I-75 in Laurel County is likely that of Joseph Couch, the suspect in a mass shooting that occurred on September 7th. Couch was accused of firing shots into cars along I-75 near exit 49, injuring five people. The discovery was made behind exit 49 after Fred and Sheila McCoy, who were live streaming on YouTube at the time, noticed vultures in the air and investigated further. The couple could potentially receive a $25,000 reward for their part in locating the body. KSP Commissioner Phillip Burnett stated, “There were articles associated with the body that, at this time, we feel is Joseph Couch.” Officials have yet to determine the cause of death. The body has been sent to Frankfort for positive identification, expected to confirm the identity as Couch. The manhunt for Couch, which drew significant law enforcement resources and community attention, began over a week ago. Laurel County Sheriff John Root said, “We really wish that we could have located Joe Couch alive. We could have asked him what his intentions were, put him through the courts, and he would have paid for what he done.” The community continues to heal from the events of September 7th, with ongoing support and resources being directed to aid recovery and ensure safety. This is a developing story, which we’ll update as we learn new information.
