FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The Fort Wayne Police Department on Thursday released the history of discipline and commendation for the officer who shot and killed a man accused of breaking into a Wells Street home earlier this month. On Sept. 6, police responded to reports of a burglary at a home in the 1500 block of Wells Street around 2 a.m. According to initial information from FWPD, police heard screams and went inside the home, shooting the alleged intruder. He was pronounced dead by medics at the scene. Thursday, FWPD named the officer who shot the man as Julian Mestre, who has served with the police department since 2018. The report shows Mestre was given three separate letters of reprimand for crashes in squad cars in 2019, 2021, and 2023. He was also given an Award of Excellence in 2021. The Allen County Coroner’s Office identified the alleged intruder as John Edward McCloud, 58, described in the release as homeless. The coroner ruled he died from multiple gunshot wounds, and determined the manner of death was a Homicide-Police Action Shooting, which is the standard ruling for fatal shootings involving police.
