NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — The Upper Missouri District Health Unit (UMDHU) is urging people to get immunizations against respiratory infections. The immunizations could include influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19, depending on your age and other health factors. Medical experts say infections follow a seasonal pattern — meaning there are usually more cases in late fall and winter, and they can place a heavy burden on families and healthcare systems. People who have chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, children under five, American Indians, and those over the age of 65 are more at risk of developing a serious illness from respiratory infections. While immunizations don't prevent all infections, medical professionals say they are the best way to protect yourself, so everyone should act now and contact their healthcare provider. UMDHU is in the second year of having immunizations for RSV protection. According to the CDC, RSV has led to over 14,000 deaths in older adults every year, as well as 58,000 hospitalizations in kids under five. Those who are 75 and older or are 60-74 and are a high risk should get the RSV immunization, also, those who are 32-36 weeks pregnant should get it, but only during September-January. All infants eight months and younger and are entering their first RSV season should get the vaccine between October and March. Activity of the flu increases quickly and can take up to two weeks for the full benefit of the vaccine. Even though COVID-19 cases remain low, new variants continue to emerge. The updated vaccine will be available soon, and every one six months and older should get the updated shot. Everyone should get information about respiratory immunization availability in their area, and UMDHU will offer the immunizations, while the supply is available. "Protect what matters. Vaccinate today," shared Juliet Artman, the prevention team program manager. The office in Williston (110 W. Broadway, Suite 101) will have walk-in flue and COVID vaccination clinics on the following days: September 27 from 1-5 pm.
