BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — For 20 years, Atchafalaya Basinkeeper has been working to preserve and protect the Atchafalaya Basin and our coastal cypress forests for future generations. To celebrate two decades of progress, the local nonprofit will host a gala at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Hilton Capital Center, 201 Lafayette St., Baton Rouge "It's going to be a really great event, and we're excited to celebrate with everybody," said Kimberly Culotta with Atchafalaya Basinkeeper. The Atchafalaya Basin is the largest and most productive wetland in the Western Hemisphere. "A lot of the work has been to prevent sediment from going into the basin, because the basin and the spillway are essential for flood protection, and the flood-carrying capacity of the basin is decreased permanently every time sediment fills in," said Brennan Spoor, who also works with the nonprofit.
