AUSTIN (KXAN) — Central Texas transportation management association Movability is rolling out a new app to Austinites that offers financial perks to those making more sustainable commutes around town. Carbon Cred allows users to track their commutes and earn money as a reward for any sustainable commute trip taken, Movability officials said in a release Monday. Those seeking out active mobility modes or shared commute trips — such as carpooling or riding mass transit — can earn between $50 and $450 a year on average, Movability noted. The app comes amid both a surge in construction projects around Austin as well as the city's continuous effort to minimize its carbon emissions. Within the next decade, Interstate 35 will be under construction and Project Connect leaders will roll out the first phase of light rail. "A historic wave of infrastructure construction including I-35 and other projects that will reduce road capacity in the next decade makes now the perfect time for Central Texans to try carpooling, vanpooling, transit, and other shared and active modes to reduce the number of vehicles on our roadways," the release read in part. "The Carbon Cred app will pay individuals for sustainable commutes, on top of the savings they’ll see from reducing gas consumption, charging, and vehicle wear and tear." The Carbon Cred app is available for both iPhone and Android users. Movability is also running a community competition through Sept. 30, where participants tracking their commutes on the app will be entered into a raffle to win two Austin City Limits Music Festival passes. As part of the competition, the person who "saves the most carbon" between now and Sept. 30 will receive a $100 gift card. More details about Movability's other transportation initiatives are available online.
