Sep 19, 2024
Cleveland Heights at Mentor
What: Greater Cleveland Conference game
When: 7 p.m., Sept. 20
Where: Jerome T. Osborne Stadium
Records: Cleveland Heights 2-2, Mentor 4-0
Last week: Mentor def. Medina, 49-14, Cleveland Heights def. Brunswick, 20-17
For the record: Mentor has already avenged two of its losses from a year ago by beating St Ignatius and Medina. Cleveland Heights defeated the Cardinals, 14-13 (in overtime), last year in a game in which QB Scotty Fox sat out with an injury. Motivation for this one will be high as Heights is the defending GCC champion. … Fox has thrown for 833 yards and 10 touchdowns, Jackson Farley has run for 592 yards and eight touchdowns, and the passing game has clicked with Justen Hodge (20-308) and Austin VanHuss (12-293) catching the ball. Mentor’s offense is operating at an unbelievably efficient pace. Defensively, Spencer Barninger and Caden Clare lead with 36 and 32 stops, respectively. … Cleveland Heights snuck past winless Brunswick, 20-17, last week to snap a two-game losing streak. The Tigers haven’t gotten their offense fully on track this season, averaging 15 points per game. RB Marquise Davis has battled injury, giving Elijah Harris most of the carries. Davis had 227 yards on the ground last week. Can Heights slow down Mentor’s offense a little? If not, do the Tigers have the offensive firepower to win an offensive shootout with the Cardinals?
