Kirtland at Cuyahoga Heights What: CVC crossover game When: 7 p.m., Sept. 20 Where: Ralph P. Adams Stadium, 4820 E. 71st St., Cuyahoga Heights Records: Kirtland 4-0, Cuyahoga Heights 2-1 Last week: Kirtland def. Independence, 44-0, Cuyahoga Heights def. Chagrin Falls, 21-14 (2OT) For the record: Cuyahoga Heights has a badge of honor on its mantle in that it is one of the only teams to beat Kirtland twice in one season — granted that was back in 2016. This has always been a tradition-rich game between two coaching icons — Kirtland’s Tiger LaVerde and Cuyahoga Heights’ Al Martin. … Zach Shafer threw a touchdown pass to lift the Red Wolves to a 21-14 double-overtime win over Chagrin Falls last week. Heights’ defense did a nice job slowing down the passing game of Chagrin’s Jacob Kay for most of the night. That won’t help a ton this week because Kirtland doesn’t throw much. The Hornets did it last week in their 44-0 win over Independence, with Jacob LaVerde throwing four touchdown passes, but for the most part, Kirtland will rely on the run when it matters most. LaVerde has thrown 11 completions this season and seven of them have gone for touchdowns, so when Kirtland DOES throw, it usually hurts the opposition greatly. LaVerde leads the area with 755 yards rushing on only 47 carries, an insane 16-yard average. Danny Alfieri has hammered away for seven rushing touchdowns this season as well. … This is a CVC crossover game that doesn’t count toward league standings. Kirtland is the top-ranked Division VI team in Ohio.
