For the record: This is the game of the week in the area, if not Ohio. Watterson is the top-ranked Division III team in the state per the Associated Press poll, while Chardon is ranked No. 2. Watterson is the defending Division III state champion, while Chardon was a state final four team in 2023 — both teams had their season end at the hands of eventual champion Toledo Central Catholic. … Watterson defeated Chardon, 14-10, last season. … Watterson has outscored the opposition, 157-13 this season with two shutouts. Chardon has outscored its three foes, 99-14. … Both teams hammered Tiffin Columbian this season, their only common opponent. … The Eagles are led by QB Drew Bellisari, whose father Greg was a linebacker at Ohio State and whose uncle Steve played quarterback at Ohio State. Top receiver Jake Uhlenhake is the son of Ohio State’s former All-Big Ten offensive lineman Jeff Uhlenhake. That type of firepower puts some pressure on a young Chardon defense that is having a spectacular season so far. Alex Ash and Jayden Buth lead with 26 tackles and five TFLs apiece. Chardon will be well-served to keep its vaunted running game going this week. QB Drayton Allgood has run for 375 yards to lead the team, with Vinny Columbi having scored seven touchdowns so far on the ground. Caleb Hewitt is a difference-making running the ball, catching the ball and in the return game. … Keep an eye on the lines. Chardon needs to win the trenches to win this colossal showdown.
