PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Another arrest was made in connection to the senseless death of seven-year-old Ny’eil Pires in Providence last month.
Her father, Nelson Pires, was arrested Wednesday for putting his child in danger and is expected to appear in court Thursday.
Pires faces two charges of child endangerment and a charge of driving without a license.
Police saying on August 29th, Pires got into an argument with two other people, leading to the gunfire that killed his daughter.
Those two men, Ahmari Cabrera and Shaheem Nathaniel are facing charges of first degree murder, assault and a litany of gun charges.
Cabrera is also due in court this morning for a bail hearing.
During Wednesday’s press conference, chief Oscar Perez says that due to this being an active investigation, there aren’t many specific details that can be shared about the case.
But he restated the department’s commitment to protecting the lives of innocent children, saying Pires’ actions went beyond poor judgment.
Mayor Brett Smiley also spoke during Wednesday’s press conference:
This crime has shaken our entire city, shaken me, it’s the first instance of a child being hurt in several years here in our city in this way
Pires has a long list of previous charges, including multiple breaking and entering charges and instances of driving without a license.
He’s expected to be arraigned Thursday morning in Providence District Court.
