BOSTON (WPRI) — The HELP Committee and Senator Ed Markey are set to vote Thursday on Civil and Criminal Contempt Resolutions for Steward CEO Dr. Ralph De La Torre. De La Torre failed to comply with the committee's subpoena and was absent from last week's hearing. The Texas-based hospital group operated about 30 hospitals nationwide and filed for bankruptcy in May. Members of the Senate committee investigating Steward Health Care's financial issues said they plan to adopt two resolutions to hold De La Torre in contempt: one for civil enforcement and another for certification to the United States Attorney for criminal contempt. BACKGROUND: Senate committee to vote to hold Steward Health Care CEO in contempt If approved, both resolutions will go to the full Senate for a vote. De La Torre has cited the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings as the reason for his refusal to testify. Lawmakers have been vocal about his refusal with Senator Markey wrote on X Wednesday, "Dr. De la torre remains in violation of our subpoena. I look forward to holding him accountable with tomorrow's contempt vote." Thursday's hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
