SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry is currently touring the state to meet with local officials in preparation for the upcoming presidential election. "We want people to know the truth that elections are safe, and people can vote with confidence in Louisiana," Landry told NBC6. The Secretary of State broke down specific measures her office is taking to ensure there will not be widespread election issues. "Only our employees ever touch our equipment," she explained. "They do the programming, they do the maintenance, and our policies and procedures include voter ID. Then, the physical security includes that our election equipment is never connected to the internet, despite what you may hear." Landry mentioned that parts of the voting system could still be improved, but they are currently working towards that goal. "The system we have is 30 years old, and we would like to get a new system in place," she shared. "But there are laws we have to follow and steps we have to take." She also spoke about new guidance on voter registration drives, calling it a "very minor change." "We had a voluntary program where people conducting voter registration drives could voluntarily give us their contact information, so we could contact them if there were any mistakes on the voter registration forms," she explained. "We are seeing a lot of activity. We always do in a presidential year," Landry said in regards to voter registration numbers. "It's a big year for getting people to register to vote." They anticipate votes in Louisiana will be 10% absentee, 35% in-person early voting, and 55% in-person on election day. She continued, "We encourage everybody to go out and vote in person if they can, and if they're going to be out of town, they can request an absentee ballot." "We have several races every election cycle that are decided by just a few votes, and I know we've seen that happen here in Caddo parish recently," said Landry. "So everybody's vote counts, and its really important to go out and vote and make your voice heard." Louisiana new voter registration lags behind past elections Several voting deadlines are coming up. You can register to vote in person or by mail until October 7th. The last day to register to vote online is October 15th. Early voting starts October 18th and runs through October 29th. The Secretary of State reminds voters to bring their photo ID when they do come to vote, due to voter ID laws.
