A man was wounded Wednesday in a shooting with U.S. Customs and Border Protection after he allegedly came at an officer with a screwdriver at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, investigators said. Officials said San Diego police dispatchers received a call around 10:20 a.m. that a CBP officer had been involved in a shooting. A man in his 20s was walking on a road in a restricted area when a CBP officer spotted him and requested backup, police Lt. Jud Campbell said in a news release. The officer confronted the man, who then pulled out a screwdriver and began moving toward the officer. Campbell said he ignored the CBP officer’s commands to stop and drop the screwdriver. The officer then fired multiple times, striking the man in the arms. He was taken to a hospital with wounds not believed to be life-threatening, Campbell said. He is in federal custody on suspicion of assaulting a federal officer. The gunfire also struck a CBP truck. No CBP personnel were hurt, Campbell said. The officer has been employed by CBP for 22 years and is currently assigned as a supervisory officer, Campbell said. San Diego police, which shares jurisdiction over the port with CBP, is investigating the shooting. When homicide detectives complete their investigation, it will be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. No trucks were allowed to cross at the port for about 2½ hours before being reopened. The closure did not affect other vehicle and pedestrian border crossing lanes. The Otay Mesa Port of Entry connects to state Route 905 on the U.S. side of the border. It is the busiest commercial port in California.
