WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Wichita Police Department said it has received reports of scammers impersonating law enforcement officers. A Facebook post from the WPD said the scammers are making it look like they are calling from the WPD's phone number. They claim the victim has a warrant for missing court and request payment in lieu of arrest. WPD said the scammers may also try to get personal information like social security numbers, claiming the recipient's social security number has been compromised. They can call from a local number and even provide a fake case number. Kansas State Fair releases 2024 attendance numbers The WPD said they are not making these calls and will never ask for your social security number or demand payment via gift cards, crypto or any other means in lieu of arrest. "We encourage the public to remain vigilant and not to provide personal information during calls from anyone claiming to be from the Wichita Police Department and requesting such details," the Facebook post says. If you receive one of these calls, report it to the Federal Trade Commission online or by calling 877-FTC-HELP (877-382-4357).
