CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Two fights that the Caroline County Sheriff's Office says were sparked by "an inflammatory social media post" forced Caroline High School into a modified lockdown on Wednesday. That same evening, school officials also launched an investigation into a threat of a school shooting posted to Instagram. Both the sheriff's office and Caroline County Public Schools addressed the altercations and lockdown in a joint statement posted to Facebook. The school division also sent parents and guardians multiple emails with updates on the situation as it unfolded. On Wednesday, Sept. 18, two fights reportedly broke out at Caroline High. According to the statement, they were prompted by "an inflammatory social media post." Caroline High was placed on a modified lockdown on Wednesday as a result of these altercations, with all after-school activities being cancelled. The sheriff's office has also increased its presence at the school. In their statement, the sheriff's office and school division emphasized that threats of death or bodily injury are a "severe offense" which, per the Code of Virginia, can potentially result in a felony charge. "The Caroline County Sheriff's Office and Caroline County Public Schools urge all parents to speak with your child(ren) about the severe consequences of making threats and spreading unconfirmed or inaccurate information," the statement reads. "If a student/family member hears or views a potential threat, it is imperative that they report it, not repost it." ‘We don’t want to break people’: Lawmakers, advocates make recommendations after Irvo Otieno’s death In an email sent to parents and guardians at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, the school division provided additional details on a threat of a school shooting made on social media. "We have learned that there is a new message circulating on a student chat group and social media regarding an event where a school fire alarm is to be pulled, followed by a shooting," the school division wrote in that email. "It has been confirmed that this message was also received by other school divisions via Instagram and/or Snapchat." The school division wrote that it and the sheriff's office were working together to investigate both the origin and the credibility of the threat. "If these threats are found to be initiated or shared by CCPS students, the CCPS Code of Conduct will be followed regarding potential disciplinary consequences and legal action," the school division wrote. Another email sent just after 7 p.m. provided further context, as the investigation into the threat continued. According to the school division, the FBI Fusion Center flagged an Instagram post that it determined was initially posted from Waynesboro. Said post was reportedly reposted by a Caroline High student. "CHS will discuss this post with the student and follow the CCPS Code of Conduct regarding disciplinary consequences," the school division wrote. There will also be an increased law enforcement presence at both Caroline High and Caroline Middle schools for the rest of the week.
