More than 20 players with ties to Hawaii have taken the field through the first two weeks of the NFL season, but only one has etched his name in the league’s history books. Punahou graduate and Texans place-kicker Kaimi Fairbairn is off to a historic start in his eighth NFL season. The Kailua native became the first kicker in league history to make six field goals of 50 yards or more over a two-game span. Fairbairn’s remarkable performance earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. In Houston's victory over Chicago on Sunday, Fairbairn went a perfect 4-for-4, drilling kicks from 59, 56, 53, and 47 yards. His accuracy helped the Texans improve to 2-0. Following the game, star quarterback C.J. Stroud was quick to praise his kicker. You broke a record today or something like that. We definitely need him. All points are big points. The way he prepares and the way he practices, you know he’s going to knock them down.” Beyond the NFL record for 50-plus-yard kicks in a two-game span, Fairbairn also became the first kicker in league history to make three 50-yard field goals in multiple games over his career. It was the third time in his career that he’s earned the AFC's weekly honor. Texans head coach Demeco Ryans also acknowledged Fairbairn’s impact. “The game has definitely changed from that perspective. A lot of kickers can hit the long ball. When you have a guy like Kaimi who can do that, it just helps the offense. We’re excited for him and thankful to have him on our side.” Heading into Week 3, Fairbairn leads the NFL in accuracy, having gone 7-for-7 this season. Dating back to 2022, he’s made 63 of his last 66 attempts. Next up for Fairbairn and the Texans: a matchup against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
