A two year old girl is recovering in the hospital after she was shot while sleeping in her bed early Sunday morning. That drive by shooting happened around 1:40 am at Evoke Living at Westerly Hills. Leilone Kinard’s aunt Andrea Carballo says the child has endured two surgeries after she was shot in the stomach. “By the grace of God, it didn’t hit any major organs or anything like that,” Carballo said. “She does have a little bit of a road ahead of her as far as like with physical therapy, things like that. So hopefully we can get her everything that she needs.” Carballo says Kinard’s family fears for their safety in their current apartment complex after several shootings within a few days. “She got shot in her sleep at home she had nothing to do with anything. Where is it safe at this point?,” Carballo asked. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police arrived to Evoke Living Lane around 1:40am Sunday. Officers found several apartments hit with bullets and Kinard shot in the stomach. Officers rushed the child to the hospital in a patrol car. “Financially, it’s definitely impacted them a lot because they’re scared to live on the premises,” Carballo said. “Even after she was injured, there was another drive by the occurred at about 4:30 in the morning.” After the shooting, CMPD installed a watch tower near the scene, but police have not announced any suspects or arrests. While Kinard recovers, her aunt wants the shooters to know the impact of their choices. “When does that stop?,” Carballo asked. “We’re wiping out future generations and it’s just a travesty not only to this city, but to this nation.” Kinard is in stable condition and under sedation. Her family hope she will be out of the Intensive Care Unit within the next 24 hours. A Gofundme has been set up to help assist the family with relocating and medical bills. CMPD says investigators are still looking into who pulled the trigger and why. If you know anything that can help solve the case call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
