LAWNDALE, N.C. – Two high school students were killed and another was seriously injured in an accident minutes after dismissal in Cleveland County on Wednesday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. It happened around 3 p.m. in front of Burns High School on East Stage Coach Trail in Lawndale, North Carolina. Authorities say three students were traveling west on NC 182 in a Ford vehicle. The driver, 17-year-old Dequavious Hopper, failed to yield to right of way while attempting to make a left turn and collided with a F-450 truck heading east, the highway patrol said. Hopper died at the scene and a backseat passenger, 14-year-old Jaelyn Abraham, died while being transported to the hospital. The front seat passenger is in critical condition, officials said. No one in the pickup truck was injured. Cleveland County School provided the following statement on the deadly accident: “We are deeply saddened to share about the accident at Burns High School. Our hearts go out to their families, friends, and all who loved them. This loss impacts our entire school community. Counselors will be available in the coming days for any students needing support. In these difficult times, let’s come together, support one another, and keep the families of these students in our thoughts and prayers. We are here for each other.” Deputies say no charges will be filed in this collision. The crash remains under investigation.
