METAIRIE, La. (BRPROUD) — Dual-threat quarterbacks tend to be the Achilles heel for the Saints. In 2023, they were plagued by quarterbacks Jordan Love and Baker Mayfield. This year’s first test is Sunday with Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts. Hurts has the fifth most rushing yards among quarterbacks over the past 10 years. He plagued New Orleans when he last faced the black and gold in 2021, rushing for three touchdowns in a 40-19 Eagles win. Containing him poses a difficult challenge for the Saints defense because of his ability to make throws on the run and pick up yards with his legs. “We're going to have to do a great job of really just plastering in coverage," said Tyrann Mathieu, Saints safety. "I think a lot of times he's one of those guys that he'll take the 20 yards you can give him, but he's usually trying to find somebody downfield to throw the ball to. So, I think plastering and covering longer than usual will kind of be a thing Sunday.” Saints’ Alvin Kamara named NFC Offensive Player of the Week "Hurts' ability to hurt you, no pun intended, with his feet makes him a significant challenge to have to deal with," said Saints head coach Dennis Allen. "They make you play 11 on 11 football, and they do a really good job of it. I think they got a really tough scheme.” The Eagles also added another weapon in the backfield, running back Saquon Barkley. The Saints had no problem with Barkley last year in Week 15. New Orleans held him to just 14 yards with the Giants, but the Saints say he's a different back with Philadelphia.
