MARYLAND (DC News Now) -- Maryland State Police (MSP) are warning residents about an internet scheme involving Gmail accounts. According to MSP, from August through September, the Maryland State Police Financial Crimes Unit received reports of several internet-based schemes specific to Gmail accounts. The reports indicate that the fraudsters email the potential victim's Gmail account with a photograph of their residence from Google Maps and demand that the victim send money to them via Bitcoin. DC police warning residents of new email extortion scheme going around The swindlers also attempt to blackmail people into believing that they have engaged in viewing pornography or that their personal information has been taken and will be used against them if they don't send money through Bitcoin, according to police. MSP urges residents to be careful with links and websites, not share personal information and think rationally. Anyone who has been the target of a scheme is encouraged to contact their local police department or the closest MSP barrack.
