SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- San Francisco isn't doing everything it can to make its city streets cleaner, advocates from the People's Budget Coalition and the Coalition of Homelessness are claiming. Advocates are calling on Mayor London Breed and the city to allocate "already available funds" to open 24-hour sanitation pit stops-- what they describe as a "necessary measure to address the growing sanitation crisis on the city's streets." Pit stops, according to advocates, offer "dignity to those in need" by providing "essential" public restroom and sanitation services, which also help maintain street cleanliness. According to San Francisco Public Works, there are currently 30 locations around the city. With limited operating hours and "a lack of sufficient facilities," advocates claim, "the program is failing to meet the demands of the city's busiest neighborhoods." The Coalition on Homelessness argues that expanding to 24-hour services is a "practical, achievable solution" to "significantly improve street conditions." "It’s baffling that with millions of dollars sitting unused, the city chooses to ignore a straightforward solution to a problem that affects everyone. We’re not asking for the impossibl —just for the city to use the funds it already has to make our streets cleaner and safer for all." Jennifer Friedenbach, Executive Director of the Coalition on Homelessness. Friendencach claims this affects the city's most vulnerable residents, including low-income families, seniors, and unhoused individuals. She claims a lack of accessible around-the-clock facilities leads to a lack of options, hence turning city streets into unsanitary conditions. "The solution is right in front of us. Expanding pit stop services to 24 hours will not only helpkeep our streets clean but also provide a humane and dignified option for those with nowhere else to go," said Friedenbach, claiming the city’s refusal to act on the measure is a "failure of leadership that impacts everyone." KRON4 has reached out to SF Public Works for comment and have not heard back as of the publishing of this report.
