(KRON) -- It’s been two months since California Governor Gavin Newsom increased deployment to an East Bay law enforcement surge operation that began in February. On Tuesday, the governor’s office announced California Highway Patrol’s recovery of over 600 stolen vehicles and over 300 arrests made since the escalation in July. The CHP surge operations in Oakland and the greater East Bay area are in response to the California Department of Justice’s data that showed a crime spike in Alameda County in 2023, according to the governor’s office. “Alameda County had the highest homicide, violent crime, and property crime rates of California’s 10 largest counties in 2023,” a statement released Tuesday said. Military family’s moving truck stolen in Oakland Tuesday marks the halfway point of increased CHP presence in the East Bay, Newsom said. Since the surge operation began in February, CHP has made 930 arrests and recovered 1,809 stolen vehicles, according to the governor’s office. Over a third of those arrests, 329, came in the last two months after Newsom quadrupled the number of officer shifts in the area. There have been 93 firearms seized in the surge operation, with 35 of them coming since July. In addition to the latest figures, Newsom also announced that the installation of a Flock camera network across state highways was completed last week. The governor’s office said that the Oakland Police Department has also installed over 100 cameras on city streets. “As we enter into the second half of this surge operation, I thank the CHP officers on the ground who are making a difference in the East Bay,” Newsom said in Tuesday’s announcement. “We are standing up for Oakland by helping to end the pervasive lawlessness and support and revitalize this incredible community.”
