WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- KSN News had the pleasure of welcoming Chewie the Sloth to our noon news Wild Side segment on Wednesday. Most of the time, you can find him at Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Goddard. Kiana Lucero from Tanganyika shared the spotlight with Chewie, especially since he would not let go of her. "It's kind of a confusing name because all sloths have three toes," Lucero said. "So he does have two claws up on his hands, and that's how he gets that name. Personally, I think he should be called a two-fingered sloth." Wild Side: Jordy the African penguin visits from Tanganyika Wildlife Park Chewie was born at a zoo in Missouri but has lived at Tanganyika most of his life. While at KSN, he kept putting his head back and looking at the lights. "Lights are exciting to him," Lucero said. "But also, they're used to living upside down in the rainforest. So he kind of moves throughout the trees, hanging upside down ... and so he just likes to be upside down and look at everything upside down." In the wilds of Central and South America, sloths eat leaves, flowers, fruits, bugs, and, if they can catch it, a little bit of meat. "Sloths are not super fast, so meat's not a huge part of his diet," Lucero said. She said Chewie has a sweet tooth and loves pears. Sloth hair is very coarse and wiry. "They have some grooves on their hair to allow algae to attach and to grow on their body, to help them camouflage," Lucero said. Wild Side: Nigerian Dwarf goat visits from Tanganyika Wildlife Park The rain beads on the hair and rolls off. "When he's hanging upside down, that water just runs right off of his body," Lucero said. You can sign up for a meet-and-greet to meet Chewie and some of the other animals at Tanganyika." She said the meet and greets sometimes fill up on the weekends, but visitors who come Monday through Friday should not have a problem. "We do offer those through our off-season, too," she said. "So, even after we close in November, we will have some meet and greets available if you still want to come out to the park and meet some critters."
