Share your thoughts on Trenton’s Christopher Columbus Statue (L.A. PARKER COLUMN)
Sep 18, 2024
If you want to start a debate that lasts a lifetime, make Christopher Columbus the topic.
Not enough space nor hours in a typical day exists here for that discussion. Come back in October when some celebrate the Italian navigator and explorer.
In July, 2020, Trenton removed Christopher from his perch atop a ship’s bow in Columbus Park following numerous vandalism attacks. Plus, a growing displeasure with historical references that labeled Columbus a murderer, thief and enslaver of Taino Indians, changed the one-block area’s name to Unity Park.
Currently, the Columbus statue remains tucked away in a Trenton warehouse. Supporters of the Italian want ownership of the statue.
So, should the city sell the statue? Make it a gift? Or, perhaps put it back since the foundation remains in Columbus/Unity Park?
Waiting to hear your responses.
