PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Teachers and staff at Legacy Academy High School, Pawtucket's new charter school, are celebrating a successful first month of classes. Legacy High School is an extension of the Segue Institute for Learning, which previously served students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Founding Principal Mimi Tsiane said the school is dedicated to shaping future educators, with graduating students already Teacher Assistant Certified. "Our mission is creating educators of color of the future and also community leaders," Tsiane said. "We're making sure that we create a curriculum that really targets and is tailored for them." "We really want to get these students excited about that, so that way we have a pipeline of educators of color here in Rhode Island," Segue Institute co-founder Melissa Lourenco said. Are local school districts still dealing with teacher shortages? The school offers free education to 400 students from Providence, Pawtucket, Woonsocket, and Central Falls. "When our students walk into the classrooms, they see themselves, so they know that education is accessible for them and that education can be a place of success," Tsiane added. The school has also gained support from nonprofit Teach for America, which aligns with its mission by providing equity-oriented teachers like English instructor Zyen Smoot. "We're becoming more open to having more deep conversations about the best ways we can educate our youth so they can have passion," Smoot explained. "So that they can want to do something that's beyond just whatever they've been taught, that they can do or whatever type of stigmas that may be placed upon them." Tsiane told 12 News that plans are underway to move into a larger building for the next school year.
