PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — After toymaker Hasbro confirmed it is considering moving its headquarters out of Rhode Island, Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien said keeping the company local is a top priority. Grebien told 12 News he learned of Hasbro's potential move to Massachusetts at the same time as everyone else when the news broke earlier this week. "People just have to understand ... it's not something we're going to be able to change overnight," Grebien said. "But we're going to work on it and work with the organization." TARGET 12: Hasbro mulls leaving Rhode Island Having experienced the loss of the PawSox a few years ago, Grebien emphasized that Hasbro remains a key part of Pawtucket and Rhode Island’s identity. "There's over a thousand jobs, there's buildings in Pawtucket. And then there's the prestige of having this global company here that started here," he said, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. Grebien added that he and Gov. Dan McKee are committed to working together to keep Hasbro in Pawtucket. He also told 12 News he has reached out to Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks and plans to meet with him, as does McKee. "We have our residents that we have to protect, but we want to do everything we can to respect them and make sure that we're living up to what their expectations are and providing what they need." Meanwhile, a source told 12 News that Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey’s team has already held informal discussions with Hasbro about the potential move. Despite the uncertainty, Grebien highlighted ongoing developments in Pawtucket, including new retail and housing opportunities and the construction of the new soccer stadium. While Hasbro has been woven into the fabric of the city for nearly a century, Grieben said he understands the company also has to make business decisions. "Even though we have our bad days, we've been resilient," Grieben said. "We're coming back, and in my 14 years, I think these are the brighter days."
