LACOMBE, La. (WGNO) — Severe overcrowding at the St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter could force the agency to resume euthanizations. It stopped euthanizing animals a few years ago, but it might have to start again. "I don't want to have to euthanize animals here. This is a plea for help," said Animal Control Supervisor in the St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services Rob Bremer. Threat made toward Covington school deemed not credible, juvenile released The shelter is trying its hardest to remain a no-kill facility, but with so many animals coming in, it's become overwhelming. "We were overcapacity pre-storm. Post-storm we saw a surge of about 40 to 50 pets that came in. It was unprecedented for us. We were not prepared for it. We were already over 108, overcapacity here," said Bremer. It's been four years since the shelter has had to euthanize an animal. Bermer says it's sadly their last resort, as they've looked for other options. "Adoptions have decreased a couple of hundred each year for the past couple of years. People have made comments to other agencies, but we have already reached out to those agencies. They've told us no and they are not trying to be mean, but they are at their care capacity too," said Bremer. Christine Ryniker says most staff members are getting emotional thinking about Friday, praying more people will walk through the doors and adopt. "We know their situations, and when someone loves them enough to take them into their homes, we are just ecstatic. It's the most rewarding thing we can do as volunteers is get these dogs into good homes," said Ryniker. Even if it's not adoption, fostering would be a huge help. "I would like to get an additional 60 dogs and 20 cats out of this shelter to really make an impact. If you got a spare bedroom, you got a little extra time on your hands and you want to help your community animal shelter come down and see us," said Bremer. The animal shelter has extended hours for adoption and fostering on Thursday, Sept. 19. The new times are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. All animals can be seen on the St. Tammany Parish government website.
