5 p.m.: Memphis-Shelby County Schools were locked down for hours Wednesday because of a threat made against Southwind High School that spread to other schools, Superintendent Marie Feagins said. School superintendent says Southwind threat prompted lockdowns ***** MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Multiple schools across Memphis and Shelby County were put on lockdown Wednesday due to threats. Memphis Shelby County Schools told parents, "We are aware of a threat to several of our schools. As a precautionary measure, please do not go to your child's school as law enforcement is actively investigating. We will provide updates as necessary." The Shelby County Sheriff's Office posted this to social media: "This morning, multiple threats were made against multiple Memphis Shelby County Schools within Memphis and unincorporated Shelby County. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Memphis Shelby County Schools and local law enforcement, is focused on ensuring the safety of all students and faculty. We ask that parents refrain from coming to the schools to pick up their children while we investigate these threats. Your cooperation is appreciated." Sheriff's Department vehicles parked at Southwind High School on Wednesday Germantown Police also said they were responding to Germantown High School and other schools in the city: "We are aware of the threat and current lockdown at Germantown High School. Officers are working with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Homeland Security to determine the legitimacy of the threat. We a have large contingent of personnel at the school and we will remain on-site out of an abundance of caution. By 2:15, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office posted, "... we no longer see an immediate threat. We have agreed with Memphis Shelby County Schools to proceed with student dismissal." MSCS said it will dismiss schools at normal times, and all after-school events are cancelled. "MSCS is in cooperation with law enforcement, who are actively investigating today’s events. As the investigation continues, we no longer see an immediate threat. We will continue with normal school dismissal times." Other schools in the Mid-South area that are not on lockdown have also issued statements in regard to the threat of violence to schools. Bartlett City Schools are not on lockdown but says, "BCS/BPD are aware of a possible threat of violence to schools in the area. No threats have been made to any of our schools." Lakeland schools are not on lockdown, but says, "We have informed parents and staff of the situation in other areas of the Mid-South. We continue to monitor the safety of our students and teachers." Collierville is not on lockdown, but they shared a message with parents saying, "Collierville Schools Families, Collierville Schools, and the Collierville Police Department have been made aware of a possible threat to a school or schools in the Memphis/Germantown area. Please know that there have been no threats made to any Collierville school and the safety of our school community is our top priority. This situation appears to be part of a trend across the Mid-South.  The Collierville Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers are continuing to monitor the exterior areas of their respective campuses and CPD has asked patrol officers to extra patrol the area schools for any suspicious activity.  We appreciate your understanding as we remain committed to student safety and a high-quality learning environment." Arlington schools shared a message with parents saying, "Dear Parents & Guardians, we want to inform you that neighboring districts and recent reports have alerted us to a possible threat involving a school or schools in the Memphis/Germantown area. Rest assured, no threats have been made against any ACS campus. The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. We will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to ensure continued safety. This appears to be part of a larger trend affecting schools across the Mid-South and throughout Tennessee.  Thank you for your understanding.
