GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- When it comes to homelessness in Greensboro, the amount of people in need is growing, and the resources are overwhelmed. Downtown businesses want to build a united front to find solutions and help the people on the streets. They say it starts with a conversation. Scuppernong Books is hosting a town hall at their store to invite leaders at the Interactive Resource Center, clients at the IRC and anyone else who lives or works downtown to ask questions, get answers and find out how to work together. “I see these people every day,” said Steve Mitchell, one of the owners at Scuppernong Books. He has seen the homelessness issues up close for the last 14 years. “They need more help than they are getting, and there is only so much that we can do as a downtown business." He doesn’t have all the answers, but he does have the space for people to come together. “For a long time, it has sort of been a side issue that has been swept under the rug or kept over someplace, and I think we need to kind of start to talk about ... a major issue in our community because these are people who are part of our community,” Mitchell said. It is a chance to ask questions about the operations at the IRC and their role in the larger approach to fighting homelessness in Greensboro. “I think what we would all love is some kind of cohesive system that incorporates a lot of different organizations that addresses homelessness, and we don’t have that,” Mitchell said. "There is no simple solution, but there can only be progress when people work together. I definitely know that kind of conversation needs to happen,” Mitchell said. The town hall is happening at Scuppernong Books on Oct. 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. If you are interested, they ask that you RSVP so they can get an idea of how many people will show up. Depending on how it goes, this could be the first of many conversations to come.
