ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- Kosciusko and Jay counties are under Burn Bans as drought conditions persist across northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.
Although more than half of the counties in Indiana are under Burn Bans, Kosciusko and Jay counties are the only ones in northeast Indiana as of Wednesday. Huntington County also announced Wednesday it is under a "burn advisory" by order of the Huntington County Fire Chiefs Association.
Drought expands and intensifies across NE Indiana and NW Ohio
According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), Burn Bans can be ordered by a local fire chief or imposed by a local legislative body.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal does not declare local Burn Bans but will support areas that do implement them if it helps reduce the risk of fires during dry weather periods.
Leaders will often look at soil conditions, wind speeds and humidity when determining whether to implement a Burn Ban, according to the IDHS.
