WILLISTON, ND (KXNET) — A Williston man is being charged with reckless endangerment after a gun discharged in his living room while his son was watching TV. The Williston Police Department said that on Sept. 14 around 8 p.m., they responded to a request for assistance at an apartment in Williston after a gun went off there. Upon arrival, an officer talked to the father, who reported the incident. He was home with his wife, four-year-old son, and newborn daughter. The father said his son, who was watching TV, ran to inform him of a loud thump he heard in the living room. He said he saw a bullet hole in the ceiling, gathered his family, left the apartment, and contacted law enforcement. The father initially said he placed a firearm/magazine on the table in the living room, and that it fell and discharged, but he changed his story when the evidence didn't match up. He allegedly said that the weapon landed "on a tool kit box below," and then said that "maybe it discharged when I put it down." Man accused of killing sheriff’s deputy to change plea He initially gave the officers consent to search the apartment but withdrew it, saying he drank alcohol before the incident. Before he withdrew his consent, officers saw that a round entered the ceiling, hit a wall, and got lodged in another wall in the apartment. The officer said the angle of the bullet hole was not consistent with the father's story of how the gun was discharged. Later that day, officers obtained a search warrant for the apartment and found a handgun along with two magazines. They also found a hole in the floor five to seven feet from the table the father said the gun fell from. The Williston PD said the father "created a substantial risk of serious bodily injury or death to another," and that he didn't have a license to fire a gun in the city. He was charged with Reckless Endangerment, a Class C felony, and Discharge of a Firearm Within City, a Class B Misdemeanor. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
