BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Baton Rouge Police Department arrested a teen accused of threatening to suffocate and kill her 1-year-old baby.
Tylaja Hulbert, 17, was arrested on Monday, Sept. 16, and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. She's charged with attempted first-degree murder.
Officers responded around 7:43 p.m. on Sept. 16 to Brady Street in reference to a public assistance request. According to an arrest affidavit, BRPD said a counselor at Collegiate of Baton Rouge Charter School requested a welfare check on Hulbert.
During the course of an interview, Hulbert reportedly said she made a "statement in regard to smothering the victim, her child, out of emotion." According to the affidavit, around 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 14, two witnesses said they saw Hulbert trying to suffocate her baby with a pillow.

The affidavit stated that one of the witnesses "saw the victim's eyes roll back and heard her gasp for air." The witness took the baby away from Hulbert and put her in his room.
During another interview, Hulbert said she did not use a pillow but she positioned her hand over the baby's face for two to three seconds. According to the affidavit, Hulbert said "she understood this was an attempt at suffocation, and that she was sorry, and wouldn't do it next time."
Hulbert showed how she placed her hand over the baby's nose and mouth. According to the affidavit, she said she blacked out "due to being emotional from a phone conversation with her girlfriend."
