BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Authorities at first believed robbery was the sole motive behind the shooting death of a man found in a crashed vehicle in Lamont. The man sold drugs, and a large amount of marijuana was found inside the vehicle, according to sheriff's reports. But while robbery allegedly played a part, one of the suspects told investigators retaliation was also behind the July shooting, according to the recently released reports. Romieo Narvaez said the victim was from the "opposition" and had previously robbed co-defendant Gabriel Prieto's "people", the reports say. He told investigators "they" -- the word is in quotation marks in the reports and it's unclear if Narvaez meant Prieto's "people", or he and Prieto -- were going to "get a lick back", meaning a robbery in retaliation for the one Narvaez said the victim had previously executed. Narvaez, 24, and Prieto, 23, have pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and robbery. They're being held without bail and are due back in court Thursday. Narvaez also has a pending vehicular manslaughter case stemming from a fatal rollover crash in Arvin last year. Deadly shooting On the night of July 29, deputies were sent to the intersection of Georgetown Avenue and Field Street, where a vehicle had crashed into a flatbed trailer. The vehicle's driver had been shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Marijuana was scattered throughout the vehicle. Investigators extracted data from the victim's cellphone and retrieved nearby surveillance footage which helped identify Narvaez and Prieto as suspects. A Snapchat account linked to one of the suspects had contacted the victim and asked about meeting up to buy marijuana, reports say. Narvaez and Prieto were found together and arrested on Sept. 5. Prieto refused to answer questions. He asked for a lawyer. Narvaez, however, admitted being there when the shooting occurred and said Prieto was the shooter, according to the reports. He acknowledged using his phone to arrange the meeting, the reports say. "Narvaez said he was not talked into doing anything, Prieto asked him to use his phone to make the call and needed his help," an investigator wrote. Asked what happened to the marijuana they stole, Narvaez said he was "pretty sure they smoked it all," according to the reports. "Based on video surveillance, Snapchat records, Snapchat videos and Narvaez's statements, I believe Narvaez and Prieto conspired to lure (the victim) to the area of the homicide to rob him, and during the robbery shot him in the head and killed him," an investigator wrote.
