BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The Kern County Fair draws hundreds of thousands of people but behind all the fun police are working to make sure guests stay safe. Bakersfield Police Chief Greg Terry says it's no small operation. "We are responsible for and running the public safety side of this security for the fair operations. we've had a lot of planning, really since the last fair occurred, we've invested in a lot of different types of equipment, we've gone out to other departments and communities where they have these large events," Terry said. "These types of large events create some challenges for us because there's a lot of people in a confined space, there's alcohol involved. There's opportunities for people to commit crimes as well and so we've really tried to focus and make sure that we have the resources necessary both inside the fair and outside to make sure our community can come out and enjoy it safely." Chief Terry encourages fair goers to be aware of your surroundings and if you see something suspicious, say something.
