LONDON, Ohio (WCMH) – In addition to the latest in farming technology, industry exhibits, and educational booths, the historic drought Ohio is experiencing has also been a focal point of this year's Farm Science Review. “Whatever the hot topic of the day, is typically talked about in all the buildings all day long, well, as you can imagine that is absolutely the topic of the day is drought," said Adam Sharp, Executive Vice President of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. "We have parts of the state of Ohio that at this point you’re hearing farmers say this is the worst they’ve ever seen in their lifetime." Watch: Drought main topic of annual Farm Science Review Farmers in drought affected areas have been harvesting between a third and a half what they would in a normal year, according to the farm bureau. They also said dry weather has forced many to start using their winter hay supply to feed livestock. “This is historic, this is something many farmers have not seen in generations if ever on their farm," said Ty Higgins, spokesperson for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. "And we need to make sure they know the resources are out there to help them through." Final language approved for Issue 1 redistricting ballot question Aaron Wilson, the state's climatologist, was also at the exposition. Drought information was posted in his area. He said he regularly fielded drought related questions from farmers. “This year obviously with the drought conditions that have really taken hold across the state, it's impacting agriculture in a big big way," Wilson said. "A lot of stress, a lot of farmers are feeling that stress as we enter the harvest season." Information about what financial assistance farmers can apply for was also posted on the grounds at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center. Wilson and the farm bureau stressed the importance of farmers' mental health as well. “That peer to peer aspect and understanding they’re not alone in these challenges is one of the biggest things we’re going to have to lean on in order to get farmers through these challenges as far as a mental health aspect is concerned, Higgins said. The last day of the 62nd Farm Science Review is Thursday.
