Jack Conklin on Sept. 18 was a full participant in Browns practice for the first time in more than a year. Conklin, a 30-year-old right offensive tackle with the knees of a 60-year-old man, suffered a torn left ACL, MCL, PCL and meniscus in the 2023 season opener in a collision with Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson. The Sept. 18 practice puts him on track to play against the Giants on Sept. 22 at Huntington Bank Field, perhaps just in the nick of time because Dawand Jones had to miss practice because of a knee injury suffered Sept. 15 in the game with the Jaguars. “I’m feeling better and better every week,” Conklin said in the locker room before practice. “So I think there’s a good shot if this week goes well we’ll be ready to roll.” Conklin missed two games with a knee injury in October 2021, returned to play against the Steelers on Oct. 31 and in that game suffered an elbow injury that forced him to sit out the next three games. He returned to face the Ravens on Nov. 28. On the 10th play of that game he suffered a torn patellar tendon that caused him to miss the remainder of 2021 and the first two games of 2022, just as the injury in the 2023 opener kept him out of the first two games this year. “We just need to make a decision, really, as you get into through a week, get in the weekend and decide what’s best for the team,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said Sept. 16 when asked about Conklin. “But, yes, he’s getting close.” Jones is hopeful he will be cleared to practice in time to face the Giants, but the Browns will be cautious. The injury to the mammoth 6-foot-8, 374-pound former Ohio State Buckeye is to Jones’ right knee. It is the same one that required MCL surgery after he was injured last December. “As long as(the trainers) say it’s okay, I should be able to go,” Jones said.  “I mean if I physically can’t do it, they’re not going to tell me I can go out there.” Left tackle Jedrick Wills practiced behind James Hudson in individual drills Sept. 18. Thought had been given to playing Conklin at left tackle and Jones at right tackle until Wills is cleared, but if the portion of practice open to the media is any indication, Hudson will start at left tackle against the Giants as Wills continues to mend from December MCL surgery. “I feel like I’m getting there,” Wills said. “I don’t know when I’ll be playing. It’s up to the coaches. Maybe this week, maybe next week. It just depends. It’s definitely frustrating, but, I mean, it is what it is. Just control what you can control, and whenever I’m ready, I’ll be ready.” Wills, selected with 10th overall pick in the 2020 draft, was the first player drafted by Browns general manager Andrew Berry. Jones was drafted in the fourth round in 2023 to be a backup tackle and maybe eventually replace Conklin. It will be interesting to see what the coaches decide when Conklin and Jones are both healthy enough to compete for the starting right tackle job.
