As first reported by Brownwood News, the Detroit Lions are signing kicker Matt McCrane to their practice squad. On Tuesday, the New York Giants signed kicker Greg Joseph off the Lions’ practice squad, leaving Detroit without the veteran backup kicker they’ve been looking for since the start of the season. McCrane has spent the last two years in the alternate spring leagues as a member of the DC Defenders, who were a part of both the 2023 XFL and the 2024 merged UFL. Last year, McCrane was 16-of-20 on field goals with a long of 58. The year before, he was 12-of-16 with a long of 50. His long-distance accuracy was pretty decent with the Defenders, as he went 6-of-8 over two years from 50 yards or longer. During his rookie season, he played for four different NFL teams, participating in a total of five games with three different teams. Over that time, he was a perfect 9-for-9 on extra points, but just 8-of-12 on field goals with all his misses coming from 47 yards or longer. McCrane will give the Lions extra insurance behind starter Jake Bates. Bates was also a star in the UFL last year. Thus far with the Lions, Bates is perfect, making all five of his field goal attempts and all three of his extra points. He has yet to attempt a kick of 40 yards or more.
