ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester police named their first suspect Wednesday in the shooting which left two dead and five others injured at Maplewood Park on July 28. Niger Johnson, 20, is wanted for reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon. Police said they had evidence that he fired a handgun in the park during the shooting, but as of Wednesday he was not directly accused of firing the shots which hit any of the victims. photo via RPD Rochester Police Captain Frank Umbrino said investigators identified at least 16 people who they believe were armed in Maplewood Park on the afternoon of the shooting. They believe 40 to 50 gunshots were fired from at least nine different handguns. Umbrino said the majority of those who police believe were armed at the scene have been identified, but so far only Johnson has been named as a suspect. "When you're talking about this many guns, this many gunshots fired, it's obviously very challenging," Umbrino said. "With Mr. Johnson, we can prove that he was armed with an operable working handgun, and we can prove where he was when he actually fired that handgun." Umbrino said investigators believe Johnson is evading police. Anyone with information leading to his arrest can contact investigators at (585) 428-9910 and may receive a cash reward. Police have released a number of photographs from the scene in the weeks since the shooting, but investigators have declined to name any other suspects in that time, saying only that they wanted to find persons of interest.
