SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Mayor Todd Gloria faced-off against his re-election challenger, independent police officer Larry Turner, in a recorded debate Tuesday. Ahead of the debate, FOX 5/KUSI's reporting partners at The San Diego Union-Tribune conducted a poll via SurveyUSA to see where voters stand as of current. A total of 668 registered voters were surveyed -- Wednesday through Sunday of last week -- over landline phones, smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices. The candidates Last week's poll shows that Gloria's lead has significantly dropped since a previous poll conducted in July. It fell from 13 points to just four points. According to the recent poll, 37% of respondents support a second-term for Gloria, while 33% are choosing to back Turner. The other 28% of respondents were undecided. As reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune, voters have become more familiar with the candidate since the last poll. Back in July, 30% of voters said they were "not at all" familiar with Turner, while another 34% said they "weren’t very familiar with him." Last week's poll, however, shows a change. The amount of respondents "not at all familiar with him" dropped to 23%, while voters "not very familiar with him" fell to 31%. “Our campaign has gained tremendous momentum as more voters learn about my vision for San Diego,” Turner said in a news release about the new poll. “It’s evident that residents are dissatisfied with the direction the city has been heading under Mayor Gloria. People are tired of empty promises and want a mayor who will deliver real results.” On the contrary, The San Diego Union-Tribune noted that Jen Tierney, Mayor Gloria's campaign manager, expressed that she was skeptical about the recent SurveyUSA poll. She pointed to a previous survey conducted four years ago. “In September 2020, SurveyUSA showed Todd losing the mayor’s race by three points, a race he ultimately won by 12,” said Tierney in reference to Gloria's then-runoff win over Barbara Bry. “I have a lot more faith in our own polling, which shows Todd with a comfortable lead. Regardless, Todd wins by working like he’s behind no matter what the polling says, and that’s how he will win another four years as mayor.” The issues When it comes to the issues, the poll narrowed down what appears to be the top two concerns on the minds of San Diegans: the cost of living (top issue by 52% of respondents) and homelessness (top issue by 27% of respondents). Another issue mentioned was the quality of the city’s roads and sidewalks, with 76% of those surveyed saying "San Diego needs to focus more on fixing them" and just 21% saying "the city is doing enough." Based on the poll, Turner has leads among conservative voters, Republicans, middle-income voters and those who voted to re-elect Donald Trump in 2020. On the other hand, Gloria holds leads among liberal voters and those who voted for President Biden in 2020. The debate San Diegans will be able to watch the recorded debate between the mayoral candidates at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening on local channel 10.
