San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies claim toxic work environment

SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. (KRON) -- Deputies at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office are going after their boss, Sheriff Christina Corpus, and her chief of staff, Victor Aenlle. Aenlle is being accused of creating a toxic work environment and engaging in union busting, according to the union representing the deputies.
The deputies and the union held a news conference where they claimed that the sheriff and her chief of staff implemented new rules, such as staff numbers at the jail, without the union’s agreement. Last week, the San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff's Association held a vote.
Ninety-six percent of members came back with a vote of no confidence for Aenlle.
The union said it asked Sheriff Corpus to investigate its claims, but instead, she is standing by her chief of staff, saying she won’t be intimidated to make personnel changes.
“No one will intimidate me into making personnel changes,” Corpus wrote in a statement released Sept. 12. “This vote is nothing more than a political stunt led by a few insiders seeking to divide this Office. It has no legal bearing and changes nothing. I appointed my Chief of Staff and he will remain in that position.”

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has contacted a judge to conduct an independent third-party investigation into the situation.
“We have commissioned Judge LaDoris Cordell to lead an independent investigation into the numerous complaints brought forward by both sworn and professional staff members of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office,” the board of supervisors said in a statement Sept. 12. “Our goal is to ensure a thorough and independent review of all allegations, to bring the facts to light, and to uphold accountability and integrity as our highest priorities — for both the members of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and our community.”
