According to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, approximately 73,750 trout will be stocked starting in late September. The following types of trout will be restocked this fall:
27,000 rainbow trout over 14 inches
Over 40,200 rainbow trout over 12 inches
Around 6,500 brown trout over 12 inches
Just last spring, 455,000 trout were stocked across Massachusetts lakes and rivers.
Fall stocking season begins around the last full week in September, depending on the water temperatures, and will be completed in mid-October. Once the stocking begins, a stocking report will be updated daily with locations.
The trout are raised at five hatcheries including four locations in western Massachusetts, Palmer, Belchertown, Sunderland, and Montague. In western Massachusetts, fish will be restocked in the Chicopee River, Deerfield River, Otis Reservoir, Quabbin Reservoir, Pontoosuc Lake, and many other locations.
Anyone 15 or older is required by the state to have a fishing license before casting their line. You can buy one on the state’s website.
