SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Crews worked to put out a fire inside a home on Meredith Street in Springfield. Springfield leaders urge drivers to slow down on Boston Road Springfield Fire Captain Drew Piemonte told 22News that there was minor damage to the home located on the corner of Meredith and Washington Streets. They determined that the fire was caused by cooking left unattended. No injuries were reported. According to Fire Chiefs’ Association of Massachusetts President Chief Michael Newbury, unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires. Officials are reminding residents to remember to stay in the kitchen when cooking, and have a lid nearby so if there is a fire, they can put a lid on the pan and turn the burner off. When baking, use a kitchen timer if you must leave the kitchen to remind you that there is something in the oven, but don’t leave the house. The Massachusetts Red Cross is also urging people to test their smoke alarms and practice their escape plan.
