PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The father of a 7-year-old girl who was fatally shot in Providence last month is now facing charges himself. Nelson Pires, 27, has been charged with two counts of child endangerment and one count of driving on a suspended license, according to city police. His daughter, Ny'Eil Pires, died earlier this month from wounds suffered in the shooting several days prior. Police said she was in a car with her father and younger brother on Florence Street on Aug. 29 when at least two suspects opened fire on the vehicle. The girl was not the intended target, according to police. Two suspects — Ahmari Cabrera, 19, and Shaheem Nathaniel, 26 — were arrested the following day on assault and gun charges. After Pires' death, both were charged with first-degree murder as well. Suspects in shooting death of 7-year-old girl held without bail Pires is expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in district court. "Our primary responsibility as police officers is to ensure the safety of all individuals, especially vulnerable children who cannot protect themselves," Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said in a statement. "The charges brought forth reflect our commitment to upholding the law and holding individuals accountable when their actions put others at risk," he continued. "We take these matters very seriously and will continue to work with the R.I. Attorney General's Office to ensure that justice is served." Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
