MEMPHIS, Tenn -- Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner is continuing his tour around Shelby County to hear those in the community concerns.  Community members were able to talk one-on-one with Sheriff Bonner about their concerns, crime, and 201 Poplar at Starbucks on Winchester Road Wednesday. “Maintain that visibility in my neighborhood and that would prevent the crime from occurring in the neighborhood as long as they are visible," said Paula Porter, community local. "So, to talk about that and to just talk about other things." Sheriff Bonner and Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner stood side by side to answer all of Porter’s worries.  Baptist Memorial building new hospital in Fayette County “It’s not necessarily about that they are going to do something immediately, but that hopefully that it will roll into something in the future,” said Porter. “I was speaking to a gentleman over there, and the issues that we are having with our youth and he gave me a couple of ideas that hopefully we can implement later,” said Sheriff Bonner.   201 Poplar was also a popular discussion point. "The Shelby County Sheriff's office, we do not have the funds in our budget to fix a $16 million fix," said Sheriff Bonner. "So, we are asking the commission to find funding somewhere. It’s not my job to figure out the funding, it’s my job to tell you what we need. We have to make the jail a safe environment not only for the detainees but for our employees." He also admits the Sheriff's Department is still struggling to fill vacancies. Man ROR after alleged carjacking, police chase, shootout “Right now, we are still short, but I’m very happy to say we have been hiring at a really good pace,” said Sheriff Bonner. Several concerned family members say they aren't able to see their loved ones.  “They should be able to see their loved ones, we are doing a lot of repairs,” said Sheriff Bonner. Sheriff Bonner also says the jail will undergo an inspection in the next week or so.
