MEMPHIS, Tenn -- Every Tuesday as part of our Greater Memphis on a Mission Series, we highlight organizations making Memphis better. This week, we caught up with a group that believes in the transformative power of a community garden. Camille James, also known as Farmer C, at the Frayser Community Urban Garden who she partners with. She loves seeing the neighbors in the community. "We take our participants from the seed then they learn the medicinal qualities of the food. Then we get into recipe development right after. Now we talk money numbers. How much does it cost to really make this product? Then we package it, label it, and then we're at the market," James said. "And how amazing it is to walk across the street and go grocery shopping for free." Non-profit makes nutrition a priority for children, adult daycares Mr. Robert Frett, a local community resident, says he comes over to the garden a few times a week. "I'm on a fixed income like a lot of elderly people, you know, any time, l can save a dollar here or there, it's always good, especially if it's fresh," Frett said. "Sometimes I come out here and just water the plants for them, put the sprinklers out. Sit down and bring a book and just kind of commune with nature for a little while, too." Frett says he loves making smoothies with fresh peppers and appreciates that James doesn't use harsh chemicals on the produce. "Come over and learn a little more about the different plants and what those plants do for you, you know, for your body," Frett said. Non-profit empowers Memphians by teaching new skills "We're here to give you the education, the tools, the resources to empower yourself. We can't feed everyone, but we can teach you how to feed yourself," James said. That is why Brown Missionary Baptist Church and the Mid-South Genesis CDC donated $1,000 to Halls of Ivy because a community garden will always grow unity.
