There's something so interesting about watching a film designed to scare you.” Another attendee, who prefers horror in books rather than films, admitted, “I love horror, but I prefer it in the form of books because there are no jump scares. Movies always startle me, so we’ll see if I survive.” Horror fans come for more than just the scares. “They’re thrilling,” shared another participant. “I love coming here for the different films and the people. It’s fun to see movies I wouldn't usually watch.” For many, attending Horror Nights is a way to confront their fears in a safe space. “Being a horror fan, this is a controlled environment to scare myself,” said another attendee. “It’s amazing to connect with others who share the same love for the spooky and creepy.” The event also brings together fans who seek community. “I found out about Horror Nights from Instagram,” one fan explained. “I love horror movies, and none of my friends do, so it was great to find a community that shares my interest. I like the unpredictability of horror movies and the thrill of being scared.” Support for local and queer-owned events was another key reason for attendance. “I came because my friend Steven is obsessed with horror movies, and my family is too,” said another participant. “Supporting local queer filmmakers and events is important to me.” Attendees also appreciate the artistic side of horror. “I like when art makes me feel my feelings, like fear,” one fan said. “Horror is like a thrill ride—people enjoy the experience without real danger. I’m always looking for the next good thrill.” The unique mix of indie films and supportive community makes Honolulu Horror Nights special. “I found out about it through mutual friends and love that we get to watch indie films,” said another attendee. “Stephen, who picks the movies, always chooses the best ones.” There is another viewing in October; so, you have time to reserve your spot and find out how much fun it is to watch horror movies with horror fans.
