LOMIRA, Wis. (WFRV) - A former eastern Wisconsin Fire Chief and Village of Lomira employee was arrested after he allegedly used his position and taxpayer funds to obtain personal items. According to the Dodge County Sheriff's Office, Keith Joas of Campbellsport was arrested for two counts of misconduct in public office and one count of theft. Authorities say that Joas, 40, was a former Lomira Fire Chief and Village of Lomira employee. Fond du Lac Police Department warning of “Sergeant Johnson” scam On February 13, Joas' employment with the Village of Lomira was terminated. Two days later, on February 15, an investigation into Joas was initiated after allegations of theft came from Village officials. Detectives with the Dodge County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the Village of Lomira, reportedly analyzed financial records, conducted a 'thorough investigation,' and determined that the abovementioned charges were necessary. Deputies say that Joas allegedly used his position within the Village of Lomira to obtain items for personal use with taxpayer funds. Softball program asks for help after nearly $3k worth of equipment stolen Sheriff Dale Schmidt expressed his disappointment, saying "Public employees must be held accountable and held to a higher standard when [they] violate the trust of the citizens in our community." The Sheriff wants all public employees to understand that while public service can be very honorable and rewarding when you cross the line and commit crimes in the performance of that duty, there will be consequences.
