COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The Columbus Blue Jackets will get back to the ice this week even as they continue to grieve the death of a teammate. The team is set to have a preseason news conference Wednesday. Its new leadership of coach Dean Evason and president of hockey operations/general manager Don Waddell spoke, along with captain Boone Jenner, defenseman Zach Werenski and center Sean Monahan. You can watch the full news conference live in the player above. The Blue Jackets start training camp Thursday ahead of their first exhibition game Monday at the Buffalo Sabres. In between, they'll have a free open practice on Sunday at the Ice Haus. Doors will open for fans at 11:30 a.m., with a full scrimmage scheduled for 12:15 p.m. With Evason now at the helm, it's a clean slate for the roster that is experiencing some small tweaks to its locker room. The Jackets new head coach said they restructured the locker room where young players and older players will sit next to each other rather than players picking their spots. Additionally, Evason said no more pictures of individual players above their lockers. Werenski applauded the change and said even though he got to keep his stall, he is not sitting next to defensemen anymore with Kent Johnson and Yegor Chinakhov among those next to him. "I think having that mix of D (defensemen) and forwards in different spots is great," said Werenski. Expanded College Football Playoff: where Ohio State sits after Week 3 The team announced its plans to honor forward Johnny Gaudreau, who was killed on Aug. 29 with his brother Matthew when the bicycles they were riding were hit by a car in New Jersey. The driver, Sean Higgins, told police he had been drinking. The team will wear a blue helmet sticker that reads "GAUDREAU" and shows two doves and the brother's hockey numbers: 13 for Johnny and 21 for Matthew. Waddell said the team will bring Johnny's jersey with them every game this season and Evason will continue to teach his players using footage of Johnny. A moment of silence will be held at the first home exhibition game Sept. 25 against the St. Louis Blues. The 50/50 Raffle foundation will be open for all four preseason home games, with proceeds going to the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation. During the regular season, every player with wear a No. 13 patch on their jerseys. Fans attending the home regular season opener Oct. 15 against the Florida Panthers will receive this patch. Normal opening game celebrations, like the plaza party, blue carpet arrivals, and more will be moved for the team's second home game, against the Sabres, on Oct. 17. The entire Blue Jackets team and staff attended the funeral for the brothers last Monday in Pennsylvania. During the service, Johnny's widow, Meredith, announced she is pregnant with the couple's third child. Matthew's widow, Madeline, is due to give birth to her first child in December. Columbus' hockey and sports community has been apart of multiple fundraisers for the Gaudreau family since the brothers were killed. The Blue Jackets are looking to rebound after two consecutive seasons finishing in last place in the Metropolitan Division. Evason enters as the team's fourth coach since April 2022, with a roster looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Veteran winger James van Riemsdyk was signed this week with Waddell and Jenner expressing excitement with him joining the team. "He's an ultimate pro. Been around a long time and every year he scores double-digit goals," said Waddell. "For us, we thought it was a good fit." The regular season opener is Oct. 10 at the Minnesota Wild.
