Support exists here for demolition of dilapidated city-owned houses as eyesores cause headaches for both city and community. Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora Monday held a press conference detailing a knockdown of 17 such houses on Sweets Ave. and Fountain Ave. One Sweets Ave. resident alleged that a nearby house had been abandoned for forty years. Needless to say the roof had caved and windows disappeared. Of course, Gusciora and West Ward Councilwoman Teska Frisby offered political speak about another significant demolition project. “This is about improving the quality of life for our residents and laying the groundwork for the future of Trenton,” said Gusciora. “By removing the worst of these blighted properties, we are enhancing the beauty and safety of our neighborhoods and opening doors for new opportunities. With support from the federal CDBG and state’s NRRP programs, we are committed to transforming these vacant lots into spaces that can serve the community in meaningful ways.” Frisby, seeking re-election in November added, “This is just the beginning of how we’re making Trenton better for our future. We are committed to ensuring that our neighborhoods are vibrant and that all residents can take pride in where they live. Removing these dilapidated structures is a critical step in revitalizing the community and supporting economic growth.” Politicians should consider less promises and simply state the obvious. In this case, admit a knockdown of 17 awful houses, then skip all the promises of revitalization and economic growth. Yes, urban residential reconversion can occur after demolition, however, it’s unlikely neighborhoods in the Fountain Ave. and Sweets Ave. area will recover in the near future. By the way, someone should explain how Trenton became the owner of these houses. A key to neighborhood stability in urban areas involves getting these former homes on the market as soon as they empty or are abandoned. Without a proactive approach to dealing with abandoned houses, demolition can turn entire blocks into wastelands. L.A. Parker is a Trentonian columnist.
