NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Progress continues on the South Coast Rail with two events taking place Wednesday promoting the future commuter line. The MBTA announced they are continuing to test commuter rail trains to and from Middleboro, East Taunton, Freetown, Fall River and New Bedford. On Wednesday afternoon, an inspection ride will take place at New Bedford ahead of the community meeting in Taunton regarding the South Coast Rail. MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng will join Representative and Co-Chair of the Transportation Committee William Straus and members of the South Coast delegation for the inspection ride. The commuter rail line — which connects Fall River, New Bedford and Taunton to Boston — was supposed to be up and running this summer but was delayed until spring 2025. BACKGROUND: South Coast Rail won’t be ready until spring 2025 Following the inspection ride, community members will have the chance to hear from the MBTA to learn more about the testing process as well as an update on the construction. In a weekly email update sent out by the MBTA Tuesday, they said testing continues with trains traveling at a speed of 79 miles per hour. Starting next week, crews will begin installing new signs along the highways leading to South Coast Rail stations. Those include Route 24, route 140 and 195. Construction also continues for the new pedestrian bridge across Route 18 and Acushnet Avenue which connects to the New Bedford station. Wednesday's meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Taunton City Hall
